On January 10, 2017 monthly guests and residents of Tilghman Beach and Golf Resort went to visit Silver Coast Winery, located less than 30 minutes from the hotel in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. In 2002 Maryann Azzato and her family opened Silver Coast Winery, with the original grape vines planted for her as a Mother’s Day gift from her daughters. The winery focuses on regional wines, importing grapes from states bordering North Carolina, many coming from the Blue Ridge Mountain region. Unlike other local vineyards, Silver Coast does not rely heavily on muscadine grapes which grow well in our climate and produce very sweet wine. All of the grape work is done on premise and aged in oak barrels or stainless tanks. On average, Maryann’s team produces 4 to 6 thousand cases of wine yearly.
During our visit Laura gave us a tour of the in-house facilities, which is capable of hosting everything from casual, small groups for wine-tasting to large, lavish weddings. Though the main structure was built in the mid-1980’s there is a vintage, timeless ambience that is enhanced with painting and signage made by local artists. After our tour, Laura joined Debbie, the on-site event coordinator, behind the bar to tell us the tales behind 12 selections of classic and premium wines, as well as a sample of their warm, mulled wine. Since the Silver Coast collection ranges from light, crisp Chardonnay to full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, all of our guests were able to claim one, if not more, favorite from the days tasting options.
