The Shag: A North Myrtle Beach Legacy
The Carolina Shag, often dubbed the “swing dance of the South,” originated along the Atlantic coast near Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach during the late 1930s and early 1940s. This smooth, six-count, eight-step dance evolved from earlier styles like the jitterbug, blending seamlessly with the rhythm and blues music popular in the region.
Its rise in popularity coincided with the burgeoning beach music scene, creating a unique cultural phenomenon that has become integral to the area’s identity.
